January 29th Road Trip

Our home break can get a little wild over the winter months, especially if you are just at the stage of catching small green waves and progressing to ‘outback’ surfing.

Designed with intermediate to advanced surfers in mind, our weekend road trips will seek out the best waves Cornwall has to offer on the day.

Explore new surf breaks, understand how the winter storm swells will work on each coast and catch some waves in the company of other like minded women.

Coaching will focus on video and photo analysis and the use of surf theory and post surf coaching tips. Our team of instructors will be in the water surfing with you and on the beach to catch all the action. Then meet in a local cafe or restaurant for hot drinks and food while we review the footage with you.

We will make a call to where we are surfing a few days before and add you to the group WhatsApp group for location and meeting point.

You will need your own transport and surf equipment and you must already be confident catching waves and consistently standing with control.

*Current NWSC members only

*Food and drink not included

Roxy Surf Weekend Newquay June 19th & 20th

What an epic weekend of surfing!

Mother Nature delivered really fun 2ft clean waves and a heavy dose of sunshine for our first day. The June Weekend kicked off at 9am meeting on Esplanade Green to find out a little bit more about each other, cover some surf safety and start setting our surfing goals for the day. Then straight off into our first 2 hour surf lesson for the morning.

Over our lunch provided by The Esplanade Hotel, we reviewed videos and photos from our first surf session. Followed by surf theory covering surfing etiquette, navigating the line up and catching green waves, while enjoying a coffee to get us ready for our second surf lesson.

The first day ended at 5pm surfed out and happy, with many of us off into town to enjoy a good feed and some cocktails.

Day two provided very clean 3ft waves, a little more challenging, but all the women picked up their surf game to match. Straight in with our third surf lesson at 9:30am to make the most of the surf conditions. We then retired to the Esplanade Hotel garden to enjoy our lunch and review videos from the morning. We also covered surf theory on forecasting, tides and how they effect surf conditions and choosing the right times to go surfing for the best conditions.

Our next surf weekend July 10th & 11th South Fistral Beach - £85 Day - £140 Weekend

We have been running surf development weekends in association with Roxy and Quiksilver Surf School Newquay for over 10 years. They are always a good laugh and a great way to improve your surfing and meet other surfing women. Open to both NWSC Members and non-members and suitable for all levels, including if you have never surfed before.

The weekend includes 2 surf lessons on the Saturday, 1 surf lesson on the Sunday, surf theory, surf videos and photos.

All equipment is included if you need it and we have a variety of surfboards if you wish to try out a new shape or transfer from a foamie to a hardboard.

Our main focus is delivering fun, professional and informative lessons, getting you up and surfing with good technique, confidence and style. Using a combination of practical teaching and practice, surf theory and video and photo analysis we will help you improve your surfing.

Suitable for all levels of surfer, whether you have never dipped a toe in the sea or are a seasoned pro, we can help you set and achieve your surfing goals. We will separate in to small groups over the weekend so the pace is set right for your surf experience and ability. Each ability group will have their own instructor to focus on appropriate skills for each level.

Devon Road Trip October 2020

Meeting in a wet and windy beach car park late on a Friday afternoon, several excited surf club members gathered (socially distanced of course). The howling wind and grey skies had us praying to the surf gods to deliver us some waves. Donning our Dry Robes and wellies, skipping to the beach to see what goods were on offer. There it was, hello 2ft and clean in Devon. Battling the wind and rain to get changed as quickly as possible we headed to the waves. No photographic record exists of this day, we were having too much fun surfing. The only photos we have are of a well earned drink after a marathon 3 hour surf - well done ladies.

Heading off to our various places to stay for the night (thank you covid rules), the princesses in the beach side apartment, the caravan rebels at Ruda and the instructor team glamping it up in 50mph winds - winning.

The weather progressively deteriorated over the weekend, as Storm Alex did his best to ruin the fun. Of course this is when the camera came out and we took our best grey and rainy shots of our awesome members shredding in the storm. There were still plenty of waves to be found on Saturday, some members heading in for 3 surfs over the day, while the instructor team battled the elements to provide surf theory and video analysis.

Surfed out and hungry we headed back to our camps to get ready for the evening entertainment. Technology is a wonderful thing. Despite being seperated into groups of 6 at various locations in Devon, we went ahead with Rosa’s now infamous surf pub quiz. Using our highest tech knowledge and some app on our phones, about one hour later than planned due to technical (knowledge) hitches the nights entertainment began. Ferry was on top form and the weekend theme soon emerged to be unicorns (not sure where that came from). We will let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Sunday morning, storm Alex is really throwing a wobbly and the beaches are red flagged all along the coast. No fear, a Sunday lay in, followed by coffee shop meet ups in Braunton were in order. In our groups of 6 (of course) we headed to the British Surf Museum and hit the local surf shops for some retail therapy. Some of the group departed home in the afternoon, while the other half headed back to the apartment for a bit of storm watching and got stuck into the classic Blue Crush.

Despite what felt like everything being against us, we caught some epic waves, had lots of laughs, learnt a few new things and made some new friends. Our now annual Devon Road trip will most definitely happen again, who’s keen for the next one?

Oggs Blogs - My First Day at Surf Club

As it turns out there is an extra comfort and a special vibe from being in a group with other women trying something new, getting in the sea together and being supported and guided by experienced, friendly and super encouraging female instructors. They will whoop you. Beware. They will get as much joy from your success as you do. They will cheer you on and whoop when you didn’t know you needed a whoop.
